Mary A. (Smagacz) Paine

Mary Agnes (Smagacz) Paine, 84, passed away January 10, 2017 at her family home where she resided for over 50 years. She was born in Chicopee to the late John and Helen (Gunn) Smagacz. After earning her degree in nursing from American International College, she worked for many years as an LPN at Belchertown State School and various local hospitals where she loved working in the maternity ward. She was a voracious reader, loved crossword puzzles, drawing, gardening, and cooking.

Mary leaves 2 daughters, Cynthia Matthess of Suffolk, VA and Merle Paine of Ludlow; 3 grandchildren, CAPT Andrew Matthess (Jessie), HM2(FMF) Aaron Matthess (Stephanie) and Amanda Waldron (Dillon); a sister, Elizabeth Fugere of Poughkeepsie, NY; 4 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Merrill “Bud” Paine; a son, Jonathan Paine; a brother, James Smagacz and a sister, Monica Kelsey. 

A Memorial Service with interment at Hillcrest Park Cemetery will be held at a later date. Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services is entrusted with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
