Abel E. Gomes, passed away at home on June 22, 2024. Born in Portugal on September 18, 1938, Abel was a son of Manuel and Virginia (Lucia) Gomes. In his early years in Portugal, Abel worked as a baker, a role that saw him pedal through the local villages on a bicycle delivering bread, a testament to his industrious spirit and commitment to hard work. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Cremilde Alves, with whom he would share 62 years of marriage.
In 1969, Abel ventured to the United States aboard a merchant vessel, where he served as the ship’s cook. He worked for many years as a construction worker. An avid gardener, Abel planted and nurtured an array of fruit trees, proudly sharing the bounty with family and friends. He was strong-willed until the end.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Cremilde (Alves) Gomes; his children, Abel Gomes, Jr. and his wife Roxanne of New Salem, Carlos Gomes and his wife Angela of Wilbraham, and Maria Gomes of Indian Orchard; his sisters, Adelina and Janet; his grandchildren, Matthew, Danny, Christopher, Melanie, Anthony, Kyle, and Katrena; a special nephew, Luis Eugenio Gomes, along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and 6 siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 at Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services, 15 Ludlow Ave., Springfield with Visitation from 9am-11am followed by a Prayer Service at 11am.
