Elaine Carlson Obituary

Elaine Marie Carlson lived an independent, curious, and quietly adventurous life—one that rarely followed the expected path and never apologized for it.

Born in 1943, Elaine came of age at a time when women were not always encouraged to push boundaries. She did so anyway. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism from MIT, submitting a thesis in 1968 that reflected both her scientific rigor and her willingness to take on complex, challenging questions. She went on to build an accomplished career in medical and scientific research, laboratory management, and technical consulting, working at institutions including the University of Southern California Medical School, UC San Diego Medical School, Washington University School of Medicine, and Amersham Corporation.

Later in her career, Elaine brought her analytical skills to public service and technology. She worked for the U.S. Census Bureau, volunteered for many years at her local town voting polls, and ultimately ended her professional career at MassMutual as a programmer—embracing yet another field simply because she could.

Elaine’s interests extended far beyond the lab. She was a licensed pilot, flew single-engine aircraft, held a glider license, logged countless hours in the air, and even completed a parachute jump in the 1970s—because, as with many things in her life, she wanted to see if she could. She was a lifelong learner who took courses simply because she was curious, and she never lost that sense of intellectual play.

Creativity was another constant. Elaine was a gifted woodworker and artisan, known for intricate hand-engraved inlay using mother-of-pearl, turquoise, and walrus ivory. She designed and crafted cards by hand, worked in leather and printmaking, and quietly mastered whatever medium caught her attention. Friends and family cherished her homemade holiday and birthday cards, her legendary cheesecake, her unmistakable laugh, and her cheerful “hello, hello” when she arrived.

Elaine loved to travel and embraced the unexpected—whether that meant trips through the Southwest, adventures in Mexico (including being there during an earthquake), or exploring new places simply for the experience of it. She was widely known as smart, creative, decisive, and refreshingly honest.

She was predeceased by her parents, Edwin Carlson and Ingeborg Carlson; her brother, Ed Carlson; and her sister-in-law, Deborah Carlson. Elaine leaves behind a small circle of people she cared for deeply, including Crystal and Timothy, whom she once described as the closest she would ever have to children—a statement she made with characteristic clarity and affection.

In keeping with Elaine’s wishes, no services will be held. Those who wish to remember her are invited to make a donation to the Agawam Senior Center, a place she cared about and quietly supported.
