Joaquim Goncalves Baltasar, 84, of Ludlow, MA passed away on Friday, December 29, 2022 at Life Care Center of Wilbraham, MA.
Born in Padornelos, Tras-os-Montes, Portugal in 1938, he emigrated to Angola at age 17. There, he served in the Portuguese military as a sergeant, then established an import/export business. Due to the Angolan independence conflict, he immigrated to the United States in 1976. He resided in Ludlow for eleven years before selling his business, Ludlow Public Market, and moving to Naugatuck, CT. While in CT, he owned and operated Wayside Market, a grocery store specializing in European goods, and Baltasar & Sons, a food-processing plant dedicated to smoked meat products. In 2010, he sold both businesses and, along with his wife, moved back to Ludlow, MA.
He is predeceased by his parents, Acacio and Maria Baltazar of Ludlow, MA, and is survived by his wife of 41 years, Grace Baltasar; sons Flavio Bruno Baltazar and wife Cristina of Riverview, FL, and Artur Aniceto of Chicopee, MA; grandchildren Gabriel Baltazar, Lucas Baltazar, Natalia Baltazar, Daniela Aniceto, Philip Aniceto, and Emily Aniceto; siblings Gloria Silva, Ana Crespo, Gloria Juliano, Jose Baltazar, Acacio Baltazar, and Rui Baltazar.
The wake service for Mr. Baltasar will be held on Saturday, January 7th, from 11am to 1pm at Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services, located at 15 Ludlow Ave, Indian Orchard, MA. Immediately following, a reception will be held at Tony and Penny's Restaurant, located in Ludlow, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations are recommended to the Escola Sao Francisco de Assis, Angola via the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Waterbury, CT.
