Joaquina F. (Faustina) Pio, 99, of Ludlow, died Monday, December 26, 2022 at the Sixteen Acres Health Care Center in Springfield. Born in Turquel, Portugal on Dec. 10, 1923 she was the daughter of the late Manuel Ferreira and Maria Faustina. Joaquina came to this country on March 7, 1970. She lived in Indian Orchard for sixteen years until she moved to Ludlow in 1986. She worked as an inspector for Chicopee Undergarment for 16 years until she retired in 1985. She was a devout Catholic, and for 30 years was dedicated to a religious retreat which originated out of Holyoke. Her life revolved around spending time with her family, making bread and homemade Portugese cheese for them, and gardening.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1967, Jose Tomas Pio, and was also predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Maria Faustina, Ana Faustina, Dionilde Faustina, Nazare Faustina, Joaquim Ferreira and Manuel Ferreira.
She is survived by her four children, Silvino Pio and his wife Maria of Ludlow, Fernanda Pereira of Ludlow, Maria Duarte and her husband Delfim of Florida, and Jose Manuel Pio and Carol of Florida, one sister, Ilda Paulo of Chicopee, as well as six grandchildren, Pedro Pereira and his wife Sandra, Sandra Kozaczka and her husband Joseph, Lisa Brecher and Joe, Jason Duarte and his wife Roxanne, Nicole Baltazar and her husband Paul, and Bryan Duarte and his husband Mark, and her six great-grandchildren, Kyle, Alexis, Kamryn, Cailyn, Max and Sam.

The funeral for Joaquina will be on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 9am from Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services, 15 Ludlow Ave., Springfield followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Ludlow at 10am. Burial will be in Island Pond Cemetery, Ludlow. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Jan. 3 from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
