Obituary

John J. “Georgie” Chmura, 95, of Wilbraham, passed on August 25, 2022. Born in Springfield on February 12, 1927, he was the son of the late Stanley and Mary (Mastalerz) Chmura. John was a graduate of the former Technical High School of Springfield and later attended extension classes at the University of Connecticut. He was a Navy WW II veteran.

John was a lifelong resident of the Springfield area and lived in Wilbraham for the past 60 years. He founded the John Chmura Insurance Agency on Main St. in Springfield in the early 1960’s and later started Shire City Insurance Agency in Pittsfield.  John retired from the insurance business in the mid 1980’s.

He was a lifelong communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, Indian Orchard and an active member of the Polish American Veterans Club of Wilbraham. He was an avid golfer and member of the Ludlow Country Club for many years as well as a skilled bowler and hockey player in his youth. He travelled extensively around the world with his wife and they enjoyed many winters together in Oldsmar, Florida. He took pleasure in spending time with his large extended family and close friends. John was a passionate sports fan who especially enjoyed watching golf and horse racing. John had a rare and unique appreciation for all life had to offer.

John was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Rita A. (Nelson) Chmura who died in 2011 and by his eleven siblings John, Stella, Julia, Stephen, Mitchell, Thaddeus, Thomas, Joseph, Michael, Bruno, and Helen. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Julia Chmura and Sally Kuras, a brother-in-law, Herbert Nelson, his dear friend, Helen Mastalerz, as well as his many treasured nieces and nephews who will miss their “Uncle John.” 

Funeral Services  will be held on Thursday, September 1, with Calling Hours from 9 AM -  10:30 AM at Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services, 15 Ludlow Avenue, Indian Orchard, followed by a Mass of Christian burial  at 11:00 AM in the Immaculate Conception Church.  Burial will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield with military honors.
