Margaret Rose Kealohilaniwelaokamanukikekapu (Freeman) Place (known as "Peggy"), 81, of Springfield, died November 6, 2022 at Chestnut Hill of East Longmeadow. Born on Hawaiian homestead lands in Papakolea, Hawaii on March 16, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward Freeman and Winifred Pakanaulu (Delacruz) Freeman Kealekupuna. Margaret worked for 40+ years for the Springfield school system and spent the last 20+ years at Indian Orchard Elementary School until she retired. She was an avid softball and volleyball player well into her 50s. She also enjoyed her weekly poker games with her friends.
She is survived by her three children, Deanna Bourassa and her husband Mark of East Longmeadow, Dean Place of East Longmeadow and David Place and his wife Lindsey of Springfield, one sister, Winona Bermudez of Hawaii, and three grandchildren, Madison Place, Kiana Bourassa and Demitri Place. She was the sister of the late Cordell Freeman and Ida You.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours for Margaret on Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 4-6pm at Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services, 15 Ludlow Ave., Springfield. The family asks that Hawaiian/colorful attire be worn in honor of her heritage. A Celebration of Life party will be held on April 30, 2023, from 1-5pm at the Marconi Club, 89 Parallel St., Springfield (please save the date!).
