Michael C. Shaughnessy, 75, of Springfield died Thursday, December 16, 2020 at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Born in Great Barrington on November 29, 1945, he is the son of Mary C. (Whalen) Rodrigues of East Longmeadow. Michael was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He had lived in Springfield for the past 50 years and worked as a supervisor for the U. S. Postal Service retiring in 2011 after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of the local Purple Heart Chapter and represented them in receiving his fallen comrades when they came home and also served at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home assisting veterans as they entered the Soldiers’ Home and when they were discharged. He also took his father, who was a WW II veteran, on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He was a sports lover and a treasure trove of sports trivia.
The father of the late Michael C. Shaughnessy, Jr., and brother of the late Ann (Rodrigues) Barry, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cynthia C. (Cowles) Shaughnessy; his daughters Christine DeMatos of Springfield and Kimberley Bouchard and her husband Robert of Ashburnham; his brothers Thomas Shaughnessy of Lenox and James Rodrigues and his wife Kimberly of Merrimack, NH, as well as seven grandchildren, Anthony DeMatos and his wife Taylor, Ashley DeMatos, Katherine Shaughnessy, and Timothy, Emily, James and Abriella Bouchard, two great-grandchildren, Harper Leigh and Adalynn Faith, and his beloved support dog and best friend, Grace.
A Committal Service with Military Honors at the Mass. Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Agawam will be scheduled in the Spring. Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services of Springfield is assisting the family with all arrangements.
