Sally Ann Johnson, 86, of Longmeadow, MA passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025. She was born in Springfield, MA to the late Madge E (Barrett) Johnson of Keene, NH and Charles R Johnson of Spencer, MA. She lived most of her life in Longmeadow, graduating from Springfield (MA) Technical High School. Sally began her art education at Endicott Jr College and continued on to receive her bachelor of fine arts degree from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She also received her teaching certification from Westfield State College. She taught public school art for 17 years in the Chester, MA, MIddlefield MA and Enfield, CT school systems. Sally became an accomplished artist as well as art teacher. She studied with noted American artist Robert Brachman for several summers. After teaching in the public schools, she decided to work on her art “full time” while also working as a travel agent and in local frame shops. Her curious nature kept her learning about art techniques and more for all her years. Oil painting was her chosen medium during her early years as an artist. Later she moved onto acrylic painting, multimedia collages, watercolor, paper making, embossed prints, jewelry making and more.
Sally was a long time member and past President of the Springfield Art League and was greatly involved in their annual art show. Her works were displayed and sold at many local galleries including the Avis Neigher Gallery. She had art shows in Springfield, MA and was often asked to assist in hanging the shows of other artists. Later in life, she concentrated on teaching adult education classes with many series of classes in Enfield, CT and at the Springfield Jewish Community Center.
She leaves behind her sister, Nancy Johnson Tyler of Cleveland, TN; her brother Wayne (Nancy) Johnson of Jensen Beach, FL and her brother Charles (Nancy) Johnson of Granby MA. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, along with many dear friends especially close family friend Alena Villa of Fayetteville, NC.
There is no planned service per Sally's wishes. Please think of Sally when you travel as she greatly enjoyed many foreign adventures; and as you admire beautiful, bold colors in nature and artwork.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Springfield Jewish Community Center Attn: The William & Margery Sadowsky Center for Adult Learning
